was the site of the first sawmill ever built.
The downtown area, specifically Main Street,
is a wonderful collection of historic mills, stores, and office
buildings. Main Street is one of thirty-five sites in Woonsocket
that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Woonsocket has many interesting activities year-round
such as the Autumnfest; the La Fete due Jour de l’An,
the New Year’s Day family celebration at the museum
of Work and Culture, Riverfest, a canoe and kayak race; ice
skating at the skating rink at River Island Park; and swimming
at the “Social Ocean” at the WWII Veterans Memorial
State Park.
Additionally, Woonsocket has the Stadium
Theater, a historical 1920’s era movie house, and many
family restaurants. There are museums and societies that offer
genealogical and historical information pertaining to the
many immigrants of French-Canadian descent that came to Woonsocket
to work in the mills and factories.
