A small Western town of about 7,000 people at an elevation of 4,260 feet, Truth or Consequences is known throughout the United States primarily because of its unusual name. Formerly known as "Hot Springs", the town grew up around the hot mineral water springs that underlie the city. Early visitors to the city were usually seeking relief from aches and pains in the healing waters. Located just east of I-25 between Albuquerque and Las Cruces , Truth or Consequences is today a frequent stopping off place for travelers and tourists. Many consider it a wonderful place to retire because of the sunny, dry, moderate climate; the proximity to lakes, mountains, and historical areas; numerous restaurants; and lots of community recreational activities.
