Downtown Stillwater is a bustling shopping
area that is an excellent representation of the economic health
of Stillwater. Located within the “heart” of the
city, the downtown area is the community for government, culture,
and churches. A downtown park, plenty of street-side benches
and a personalized brick courtyard provide gathering places
for residents, as well as visitors. The thriving community
known as “Downtown Stillwater” has over 50 businesses
located within its perimeters. These businesses include department
and specialty stores, restaurants, coffee houses, florists,
gift boutiques, furniture and antiques, drug stores, jewelry
stores, clothing stores, and banking and professionals. Most
of the downtown businesses are independent and locally owned.
The “picture-perfect” buildings are proof that
both the City of Stillwater and the residents have bestowed
a commitment to our downtown area. Facades have been renovated,
awnings have been added, and flowers and trees have created
a downtown landscape that makes the area attractive for both
shoppers and browsers. Yearly festivals and events include
Krazy Daze, which draws thousands of shoppers during the summer
seeking bargains and fun. The downtown area also hosts the
yearly Halloween Fest parade, and the Festival of Lights Holiday
parade and festival. Past downtown events have included Blues
Festivals, Harley Peel-Out, and a Native American Arts Festival.
If your looking for outdoors visit Lake Carl Blackwell. Located
seven miles west of Stillwater, the area includes 3,350 acres
of beautiful lake as well as an 800-acre recreation area owned
and operated by Oklahoma State University. Fishing, camping,
boating, skiing and sailing are permitted on the lake. Campgrounds
and picnic areas are available year round. Cabins are available
in the summer months. Swimming is permitted all around the
lake, although there are two sites with buoys. Or head on
over to Lake McMurtry. It's operated by the City of Stillwater,
the lake offers a swimming area, fishing, boating, camping,
mountain bicycle and hiking trails and bird watching recommended
by the local Autobahn Society. Limited waterfowl hunting is
also available. If your reafdy to take it indoors make sure
you visit the Stillwater Community Center or Vivia Locke Theatre
in the Seretean Center where the Oklahoma State University
Department of Theatre produces three plays and one musical
each academic year. These professional quality productions
range from Shakespeare classics to musicals such as “The
Mikado” guaranteed to deliver intriguing performances,
scenery and costumes. Eating can be done at some great places
like Bad Brad’s, McAlister’s Deli or take the
whole family to Eskimo Joe’s where you can find that
one-of-a-kind bite to eat.
