Sterling – Located in the northeast,
this small town is a farm community and the largest town in
this part of the state. Most notably in Sterling are the living
tree carvings – trees carved into shapes such as giraffes,
a golfer, and other interesting figures.
Golf is a predominant sport in Sterling – four golf
courses in all. Reservoirs in the area are great spots for
warm-water fishing, boating, and camping. Chimney Canyons,
located just outside of town, are 250-ft. chalk cliffs that
rise from this flat farming community’s lands.
Fort Sedgewick, a re-created fort, houses Overland Trail Museum.
This museum informs visitors of the importance of the Overland
Trail in resolving the conflict in the 1860s between the Indians
and the new settlers.
For highly recommended authentic Mexican, the local diner,
J and L Café is recommended, especially for breakfast.
