Located in Pioneer Valley, on the Connecticut
River is this “City of Firsts”, Springfield.
Springfield served as a major arsenal during the Revolution.
It was known for its manufacture of firearms. Springfield
continued supply firearms throughout the 19th century and
became the sole supplier to the nation when its companion
armory at Harpers Ferry was destroyed during the Civil War,
and is home to the Springfield Armory National Historic Site.
One of Springfield’s well-known residents has been Daniel
B. Wesson, a Smith & Wesson arms company founder.
Springfield also lays claim to being the birthplace of basketball,
devised by a local physical education teacher named James
Naismith to fill the gap between football and baseball seasons.
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is in Springfield.
Travis Best, basketball player, is one of the well-known residents
of Springfield. In addition, other well know residents of
Springfield have included actor Kurt Russell and Theodor Seuss
Geisel (Dr. Seuss!), author and illustrator.
Other museums in Springfield worthy of mention and visiting
are the Connecticut Valley Historical Museum, the Indian Motorcycle
Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Science Museum. Springfield
has four post-secondary schools, and a state park - Lake Lorraine
State Park and Forest Park recreation area.
