Roswell is located in the fertile Pecos River
Valley of southeastern New Mexico, 200 miles southeast of
Albuquerque and 206 miles northeast of El Paso, Texas. The
city’s elevation of 3,649 feet, is surrounded by flat
to gently rolling terrain with miles of rich range land home
to cattle, sheep and commercial crops of cotton, alfalfa,
and sorghum.
There is an abundance of outdoor activities to suit just about
any sports lover including three golf courses, twenty-four
city parks, thirty tennis courts, and four public swimming
pools. Just east of the city is Bottomless Lakes State Park
with water sports, fishing, camping and picnic facilities,
North of the city is Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge,
home to some thirty species of waterfowl including Sandhill
cranes, ducks and geese during the fall migration. The bird
watcher or nature photographer will find the refuge a memorable
experience. In less than a 90 minute drive are mountain streams
for the fly fisherman, campgrounds and big game for photography
or hunting including elk, deer, antelope, wild turkey, black
bear, quail and pheasant.
