art galleries, tours and museums. Rochester Civic Music was
established as a city department in 1936 to "furnish
music upon the streets and upon public grounds and places
in the city of Rochester." Civic Music produces several
ensembles featuring local musicians, including the 60-member
Concert Band. Concerts include "Down by the Riverside"
and special holiday performances. Ten art galleries in Rochester
offer visitors a variety of styles and experiences. Mayo Clinic
allows walking tours of their artwork and sculptures. Rochester
Art Center, besides providing gallery space for local and
national artists, provides art courses and art education.
The Southeastern Minnesota Visual Artists (S.E.M.V.A.) feature
a gallery located in the Peace Plaza at 1st Ave. and 1st St.
NW. The collection includes everything from pottery to oil
paintings by regional artists. Rochester Civic Theatre offers
seven productions each year . This includes two youth and
five stage shows. It also produces Characters in History and
a young peoples troop that performs in the area. The Mayo
Clinic offers daily tours through the famous medical complex

Hill Nature Center as well as numerous other parks and wooded
areas. Rochester is home to many top of the line shopping
centers, stores, and marketplaces. Since it's the dominant
hub of commerce in the region, people from surrounding communities
rely on Rochester's retail market for everything from high-tech
items to arts and crafts. Rochester boasts four large shopping
centers conveniently located throughout the city. Shoppers
also have the choice of 18 smaller shopping centers. Numerous
specialty shops are scattered throughout town as well. Occurring
at various times in the summer, the Farmer's Market is a popular
attraction to the citizens of Rochester. Fresh fruits and
vegetables from the region abound. Quaint shops can be found

centers with free parking can be accessed by our major highways.
Rochester gives you the best aspects of a cosmopolitan city
in a small town environment. It's difficult to become bored
in Rochester. With a wide variety of year round activities
combined with the availability of numerous parks, Rochester
has something for everyone. Numerous parks are featured throughout
the city. Besides being spacious, the parks are well maintained
and most have tennis courts, baseball fields, soccer fields,
and playground equipment. If you like to swim, there are three
outdoor swimming areas and a number of indoor pools for the
winter months. Rochester features six area golf courses as
well. Rochester has a vast bike path network covering over
23 miles throughout the city. Another proposed 23 miles will
double the existing paths and make Rochester accessible by
bike anywhere in the city. Rochester has numerous activities
to do at night. Three movie theaters showing the latest films
can be found throughout the city. A number of nightclubs feature
dancing and live music. Some clubs cater to the teenage population
too. Rochester has its own minor league baseball and hockey
teams. Spectators can enjoy evening games throughout the season.
Oxbow Park has trails and a zoo featuring animals found in
the area. Quarry Hill Nature Center also has a number of trails
that wind through the outskirts of town and nature center
as well. Both of these have animal care units for injured
wild animals showing Rochester's commitment to the environment
it thrives in. If you happen to be visiting in the winter
and are worried about lack of recreational activities, many
of Rochester's parks are filled with sledders and cross country
skiers. For downhill skiing, hills are only a short distance
away. Ice skating and hockey are two other popular winter
activities. Access to several indoor and outdoor rinks is
available. Don't forget the goods eats that Rochester has
to offer like Broadstreet Cafe and Bar which is tucked in
a historic renovated warehouse, the Broadstreet sets the standard
for excellence in unfettered cuisine with a Southern European
influence. With luxurious menu items including prosciutto
