Providence, Rhode Island
The capitol city, Providence has recently had
a “facelift” and is once again a popular destination
for visitors. Voted the “Best Place to Live in the East”
for 2000 and 2001, Providence is also a great place to visit!
One of the oldest cities in the United States,
Providence was founded in 1636. In those days, Rhode Island
was granted religious liberties from England and became a
refuge for refugees from bigotry, such as the Quakers from
Boston. The Brown family was one of the prominent families
to settle and build Providence. John Brown was one of the
merchant settlers that established trade with China, Joseph
Brown, an architect, designed many of Providence’s finest
buildings, Moses Brown financed one of the first water powered
spinning mills, and Nicholas donated the land and money to
build the Ivy League university that stands to this day –
Brown University.
Providence is extremely rich in history. Historical
buildings in the city include, but are not limited to, the
Rhode Island State House, the prominent landmark visible when
approaching Providence, sitting on Smith Hill; Old State House,
a National Historic Landmark, the building where Rhode island
declared independence from Great Britain in 1776; The First
Baptist Meeting House, an 18th century building designed by
Joseph Brown, and mother church of the Baptist Church in America,
also a National Historic Landmark; and Museum of the Rhode
Island School of Design, displaying a collection of art from
diverse periods and cultures.
One of the newer sites and an award-winner
for design is the Waterplace Park on Memorial Boulevard. This
is a four-acre park with footbridges, cobblestone walkways,
and an amphitheater that encircles a tidal pool on the Providence
River. As well as pedestrians, the park draws boaters, artists
and performers. The Roger Williams Park has a zoo, botanical
gardens and even a casino! There are the Splash Duck Tours-
amphibious vehicles that go on land and water, a new ferry
service from Providence to Newport, galleries, museums, restaurants,
landmarks that have activities inside…the list of things
to do in Providence is virtually endless!
