This city of 23,000 is located on the mouth
of the Piscataqua River and is just 50 miles from Boston and
258 miles from New York. Settled in 1623, Portsmouth is the
third oldest city in the United States. Originally named Strawberry
Banke in 1630 due to the wild berries early settlers found
on the banks of the Piscataqua, the town’s name was
changed to Portsmouth in 1653. The country’s first naval
shipyard was established here in 1800.
There are a dozen noteworthy beaches to be discovered here,
as well as the Portsmouth Brewery, Children’s Museum,
Maritime Museum and the Harbour Trail- a historic walking
tour of downtown. Be sure not to miss The Strawberry Banke
Musuem, a recreation of life in the “Puddle Dock”
neighborhood. This collection of nine furnished homes and
gardens is located on ten acres and depicts the architecture
from several centuries of living.
