Peoria, Illinois is located approximately 170
miles southwest of Chicago and has a population of over 113,000
people. Named for the Illini Indians who occupied the area
that is now central Illinois, Peoria is one of the oldest
settlements in the state. French explorers Louis Jolliet and
Pere Marquette lived here briefly in 1673. Now a business
hub, Peoria is home to many well-known corporations such as
Caterpillar Inc., Komatsu-Dresser Industries' Haulpak Division,
and L.R. Nelson. The United States Agricultural Research Laboratory
and Bradley University also call Peoria home.
The following attractions and points of interest should not
be missed:
> The Lakeview Museum of Arts and Sciences is home to the
largest scale model solar system in the world. The museum
has exhibits on folk art, the natural sciences, archeology,
and wildlife and an exceptionally fine collection of African
art. There is also a sculpture garden and a planetarium with
laser light shows.
> Grandview Drive, called "The World's Most Beautiful
Drive" by President Teddy Roosevelt in 1910. It winds
through Peoria Heights and part of Peoria along the Illinois
River bluff, descending onto Route 29 alongside the river.
The drive features grand homes in a variety of interesting
architectural styles, plus picnic areas and park benches for
visitors.
>Glen Oak Park has several interesting attractions for
the visitor. Stroll through Luthy Memorial Botanical Gardens,
a huge conservatory that offers beautiful displays of flowers,
regardless of the season. The Glen Oak Zoo has a quality reputation
and offers both adults and children a hands-on activity area
called "The World of Wonder." The park also features
amphitheater concerts in the summer.
> The Spirit of Peoria let’s you step back in time
with a riverboat ride on a replica of a turn-of-the-century
paddle wheeler.
>And Wildlife Prairie Park let’s you go for a walk
on the wild side with bobcats, buffalo, bears and other native
Illinois wildlife who inhabit the 2,000-acre park. You can
also enjoy the walking trails, butterfly garden, museum, train
rides and country store.
