becoming the ninth state in 1788. Named for Hampshire, England
by Captain John Mason, it is known as the “Granite State”
for the extensive granite formations and quarries found there.
New Hampshire also three unofficial nicknames including: Mother
of Rivers, White Mountain State and Switzerland of America.
One of the six New England states, New Hampshire is also one
of only two places in the world with the unique combination
of climate, location and types of trees that produce such
vivid foliage in the autumn. The only other place on Earth

Great North Woods: closest to Canada and bordering Vermont
and Maine
Lakes: major vacation spots with 273 lakes, shopping and attractions
Merrimack Valley: major center of government and business
Monadnock: “Quintessential New England”
Seacoast: beautiful beaches on the shortest coastline
White Mountains: including Mount Washington, the highest point
in the Northeast
