New Bedford, Massachusetts
With a location on Buzzard’s Bay, you
can believe that New Bedford is the site for lighthouses.
The city’s motto is Lucem Diffundo (I Diffuse Light),
and is in reference to New Bedford’s fame as the whaling
capital of the world. There are three lighthouses in New Bedford;
all are in the National Register of Historic Places.
Clark’s Point Light in Fort Taber Park was designed,
in part, by Robert E. Lee and completed in 1860. It was built
atop the fort, and completed in 1869, replacing the old Clark’s
Point Light built in 1797.
The Butler Flats Light Station in the outer harbor was built
in 1898. The city owns this lighthouse standing 53 feet above
mean low tide and accessible only by boat. A re-lighting celebration
was held on April 30, 1998, 100 years to the hour of its first
lighting. This lighthouse is not open to the public.
Palmer’s Island Light on the inner harbor was built
in 1849. This lighthouse is the central element of the City
Seal that was designed in 1847 and is occasionally open for
special events.
As one can imagine, New Bedford is rich with museums. One
especially interesting museum is that of Hetty Green, the
“Frugal Woman’s Museum”, which recognizes
the life of Hetty Green, who was born and raised in New Bedford
and became the richest woman in the world, referred to as
the greatest miser ever to have lived. She left an estate
in the amount of $100,000,000 in 1916, the date of her death.
There are numerous other museums including The New Bedford
Fire Museum, an authentic 1867 firehouse filled with fire
fighting memorabilia, The New Bedford Whaling Museum, one
of the world’s foremost devoted to the interaction between
humans and whales, and The Schooner Ernestina Museum, a National
Historic Landmark.
New Bedford is has many parks and activities. Additionally,
festivals that celebrate the large Portuguese population lends
to the culture and fascination of New Bedford.
