The town of Natchitoches (Nack-a-tish, a Natchitoches
Indian word meaning Place of the Paw-Paw, or Chinquapin) is
the oldest permanent settlement in Louisiana. Natchitoches
was founded in 1714 to promote trade with the local Indians
and the Spanish in Mexico. Natchitoches population is about
16,000 people. The City of Natchitoches and the surrounding
area are known nationwide for its unique festivals and celebrations.

best known for her story "The Awakening". Every
April, people can listen to the sounds of jazz, Cajun, Zydeco
and rhythm and blues musicians who play on several stages

Since 1927, the Festival of Lights has been a huge tourist
attraction for the town of Natchitoches. Over 150,000 visitors
attend this event yearly. Last year, there were over 500,000
visitors. There is plenty of entertainment, food, rides, cruises,
etc. There is also large parade and fireworks every weekend.

Natchitoches was also the set for the filming of the movie
“Steel Magnolias”. Many landmarks in Natchitoches
were used in the film including Trinity Episcopal Church and
the Riverfront area on Front Street. The annual Festival of
Lights was also showcased in this film.
