The town of Natchitoches (Nack-a-tish, a Natchitoches Indian word meaning Place of the Paw-Paw, or Chinquapin) is the oldest permanent settlement in Louisiana. Natchitoches was founded in 1714 to promote trade with the local Indians and the Spanish in Mexico. Natchitoches population is about 16,000 people. Since 1927, the Festival of Lights has been a huge tourist attraction for the town of Natchitoches. Over 150,000 visitors attend this event yearly. Last year, there were over 500,000 visitors. Natchitoches was also the set for the filming of the movie “Steel Magnolias”. Many landmarks in Natchitoches were used in the film including Trinity Episcopal Church and the Riverfront area on Front Street. The annual Festival of Lights was also showcased in this film.
