Muncie, Indiana
Leisure time can mean practically anything
you want it to in Delaware County. We have more ways to keep
you busy and entertained all year long than you can imagine.
For sports enthusiasts, we have acres of well-maintained parks
and recreation facilities offering playgrounds, picnic areas,
ball diamonds, basketball courts, tennis courts, pools, swimming,
camping, fishing and boating. Prairie Creek Reservoir is a
1,252 acre man-made lake surrounded by 3,000 acres of rolling
hills. The lake is well-stocked with a variety of game fish.
The beach (complete with bathhouse) is an ideal place to picnic
or sun, and there are boat launching areas and docks for sailboats
and pontoons. Organized recreation programs are directed toward
a variety of age groups and feature baseball leagues, soccer,
tennis, and volleyball programs, slow-pitch softball, and
other sports. Arts, crafts, events and programs for children
are also offered through community centers. If that isn't
enough for you in the sports department, there are also a
number of private and public golf courses, bowling centers,
hiking, biking and jogging paths, nature trails, ice skating
and roller skating. More comfortable on the sidelines? We
still have a year-round schedule of spectator sports to keep
you occupied. The Muncie Sports Center is a five-diamond,
lighted softball facility which is home to many local, regional,
national and world-class tournaments. Ball State University
adds its own roster of varsity Mid-American Conference intercollegiate
basketball, football, outdoor track, golf, tennis, field hockey,
gymnastics, softball and volleyball. Fairs and festivals are
also abundant in Delaware County and draw people from a wide
area. These exciting events include the Washington Street
Festival, Celebrate the City Festival, Lions Delaware County
Fair, Gaston Free Fair, Buck Creek Festival, and much more.
From our festivals to our footlights, Delaware County offers
a colorful world of cultural opportunities. We have a wealth
of talented people in all areas of arts and outstanding facilities
to showcase their creativity. If its entertainment you want,
we have enough to satisfy the most demanding patron. You can
enjoy local, national and international stars in beautiful
Emens Auditorium on Ball States campus. The year-round Emens
schedule includes acclaimed theater, opera and dance companies
from around the world as well as some of today's most popular
groups and individual performers. Emens is also home to the
highly respected Muncie Symphony Orchestra. In addition to
its more traditional performances, the MSO season includes
fun-filled family concerts, outdoor concerts, and a Young
Peoples Concert. The symphony is often joined by well-known
guest artists from the worlds of jazz, classical, and popular
music. Masterworks Chorale, the states largest, independent,
volunteer choral group, delights their audiences with the
exceptional talent of local residents. An especially attractive
cultural point of interest in Delaware County is the Minnetrista
Cultural Center, a 50,000 square feet museum for culture and
industry. Located on the banks of the White River on Minnetrista
Parkway in Muncie, the Cultural Center has a myriad of activities
and sights illustrating the distinctive history of our part
of the state. The grounds also have an orchard, nature center,
a Victorian Center, and other historic buildings and features.
Delaware County is also home to the Ball State University
Museum of Art with permanent displays by well-known artists
Henry Moore, Winslow Homer, Anthony Caro, Edgar Degas, Claude
Lorrain, Henri de toulouse-Latrec, Christo and Alfred Leslie.
Moving drama, lively music and dance, and uproarious comedy
can all be experienced at the Muncie Civic Theatre. Ball State
University has a summer stock company of professionals from
Ball State University theater. An afternoon spent at the Muncie
Childrens Museum offers intriguing educational opportunities
with its unique collection of displays and activities. The
Children's Museum is filled with "hands-on" displays
for children. Visitors are encouraged to learn while experimenting.
One of Delaware Counties newest attractions is the Academy
of Model Aeronautics national flying site and museum. At the
AMA site, located southeast of Muncie near Prairie Creek Reservoir,
model airplane enthusiasts participate in national and international
competitions on the 1,000 acre site throughout the year. With
our theaters, galleries, museums, concerts and other attractions
added to all the recreational opportunities available, Delaware
County proves that you don't have to live in a major urban
area to enjoy the finer things in life.
