Morristown, New Jersey
Morris County, New Jersey's seventh largest
county, nestles amid rolling hills, broad valleys and glittering
lakes in the center of Northern New Jersey. In the early 1700s,
permanent settlers established Morristown and began to mine
the magnetic iron core found nearby. Soon, iron forges and
furnaces sprang up throughout the county. The abundant source
of munitions and the protection of the surrounding mountains
attracted George Washington to the area. Today the county
is known as the "Military Capital of the American Revolution."
Here General George Washington's Continental Army encamped
during two winters of the Revolutionary War. Washington used
the Jacob Ford House in Morristown as his Revolutionary Headquarters
that terrible winter of 1779-1780, while his troops camped
at nearby Jockey Hollow. Other famous Revolutionary figures
also made their mark on Morris County. Alexander Hamilton
courted Betsy Schuyler here, and Benedict Arnold was court
marshaled for misconduct and sentenced to a public reprimand
at Dickerson's Tavern, on the Morristown Green.
The American Industrial Revolution featured prominently here
with the perfection of the telegraph by Alfred Vail and Samuel
Morse at the Vail Homestead Farm on Speedwell Avenue. The
Morris Canal, conceived by George Macculloch, was considered
to be one of the most accomplished engineering feats of the
time. Thomas Nast, a nationally recognized political cartoonist
who lived in Morristown, created the Santa Claus character
we all know today. By the 1880's, New York City millionaires
discovered Morristown and the Gilded Age began.
Over the years, Morris County has emerged as a leading business
center. More than 50 Fortune 500 firms have headquarters,
offices or a major facility in the county.
The "new" Morris County Courthouse was built between
1826 and 1827. It was designed by two local architects, Joseph
M. Lindsley of Morristown and Lewis Carter of Chatham, and
is one of New Jersey’s most important public buildings
in the Federal style. For many years, bells rang from the
belfry at the start of court and when fire threatened a building
in town.
Above the front entrance to the courthouse stands a wooden
statue of Justice. She holds a scale to symbolize the balanced
judicial system, and a sword to represent the protection of
individual rights. Morristown’s statue of Justice is
unlike most others because she is not blindfolded.
The Independent Hose Company was organized in 1834, and became
Morristown’s first incorporated fire department in 1867.
Its firehouse is believed to have been built around 1870.
It is shared between the Independent and Washington Hose Companies.
This Vernacular Gothic Revival house was built in 1852 for
Christopher Raymond Perry Rodgers and his wife Jane Slidell.
Rodgers, the nephew of three naval commodores (including Oliver
Hazard Perry), launched a successful naval career of his own.
Admiral Rogers served in the Mexican Wars, as Superintendent
of the U.S. Naval Academy, and Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific
Squadron. The wisteria, which hangs above the front porch,
is said to have been brought back from Japan as a gift from
Commodore Matthew C. Perry after his famous 1854 expedition.
Admiral Rodgers died in 1892, and his house remains a private
residence.
