History hangs upon Mobile like the Spanish moss that drapes her live oaks. Already old when the Civil War began, Mobile is distinguished from younger cities throughout the state by her rich Spanish, French, African and Creole heritage. History is reflected not only in the architecture of Mobile, but in cuisine and cultural diversity. The international trade sustained by Mobile throughout her 300-year history has provided even the earliest settlers with the finer things from Europe, England, the Mediterranean, and the Orient. Mobile's five historic house-museums, which are open to the public year-round and display artifacts native to this land, and treasures brought from far away. Grand houses and public buildings, each with its own distinctive charm reflect the builders' and owners' taste and heritage. Festivals and the observance of religious holidays were not forgotten by early settlers; thus, from its founding in 1702, Mobile has celebrated Christmas, "Boef Gras" (now called Mardi Gras), Lent, Easter and more. Modern-day celebrations now include BayFest (October) Kwanza (December) and First Night Mobile (January). For almost three centuries, Mobilians have welcomed visitors from practically every nation of the world, extending to them the hospitality that has earned us the reputation of being one of the most gracious cities in the South. Enjoy spectacular golf, breathtaking attractions, and great shopping. Visitors to Mobile are often astounded by the quality of golf courses available. Gold Digest ranked Mobile as one of the top ten golf value destinations in the United States. But it's not just the value visitors love - it's the variety of challenging courses to play. The Mobile area has become an excellent destination for those seeking a championship-quality vacation. Like Rock Creek who offers 18 holes over scenic hills and natural hazards. Great service has earned this facility four stars from Golf Digest. Or a part of the famous Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, Magnolia Grove Golf Course offers 36 holes of championship play. An additional 18-hole par 3 venue. It's also the site of the Nike Tour Championship in 1998 and LPGA's Golf Champions tournament in 1999. Shopping is fun in the Mobile area. Throughout the area there are antique shops, outlet stores and sophisticated shopping centers with national-brand stores. Colonial Mall Bel Air, Toomey's Mardi Gras Mart, and Gourmet Galleyoffer great shopping items. To navigate your course through the numerous activities and sites in the Mobile area, the best place to start your visit is the Fort Conde Museum and Welcome Center. Here you can enjoy the reconstructed 18th century fort which features sprawling bastions, cannons and firearms, museum areas, exhibit rooms, powder magazines, and dioramas. Watch as "soldiers" in period dress fire the cannons and the muskets! Once you have finished exploring the museum, visit the Welcome Center which carries brochures and information on every exciting attraction and interesting site in the Mobile area. You can also stock up on Mobile branded merchandise, Mardi Gras beads and souvenirs in the gift shop. Your next stop, just three blocks away, should be the Phoenix Fire Museum which houses five turn-of-the-century fire engines, as well as historic and unique fire-fighting equipment. Then onto the spectacular 60,000 sq. ft. Museum of Mobile, which is just across the street from the Fort Conde Museum and Welcome Center. This fun and exciting facility displays two centuries of artifacts that tell of Mobile's rich history. By now, you should be ready for a pit stop to fill up on Mobile's great local food of all kinds. Downtown Mobile is filled with numerous restaurants, bistros and eateries with many items on the menus to satisfy any craving or appetite. After lunch, take a few minutes to stroll through the downtown art galleries and shops.
