Physical
Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech TherapyJobs in
Massachusetts
– Nicknamed “The Bay State” for the early
settlement on Cape Code Bay, the name Massachusetts comes
from the Algonquin Indians’ word meaning “great
mountain” (possibly for the Blue Hills). However, the
original inhabitants of Massachusetts consisted of Nauset,
Massachuset, and Wampanoag Indians.
The American heritage is embodied in Massachusetts. Famous
for the arrival of the Mayflower and Pilgrim leaders in 1620,
the land that offered them refuge from religious persecution
was to become a national (and world) leader of “firsts”.
Massachusetts was where the first free public schools were
established, had the first regular newspapers, founded the
first private academy – Harvard in 1636, and, of course,
had the first Thanksgiving Day in Plymouth. The list of “firsts”
is extensive, varied, and historical.
Definitely historical, Massachusetts is also scenic, cultural,
diversified, interesting, packed with attractions and activities,
famous for cranberries, beans, political figures and notorious
for scandal (Salem witch hunts and politics!). Yes, Massachusetts
is perfect for all kinds of adventures!
A few fun facts about Massachusetts:
State flower – the Mayflower (or ground laurel)
State dog – Boston Terrier
State fish – Cod
State dessert – Boston Cream Pie
State cookie – Chocolate Chip (named after the Toll
House Cookie Restaurant in Whitman, MA)
