Lake Havasu, Arizona
It's a beautiful day here in Lake Havasu. The
sky is blue, the air is clean, and the sparkling blue water
with its beautiful mountain backdrop is truly an awesome sight.
Just about every night it seems you can reach up and pluck
the stars from the tranquil desert sky.Lake Havasu City, the
famed home of the London Bridge, was named for its 45-mile
long lake on the Colorado River, named by the Chemehuevi meaning
"Land of the Blue Green Water". The Lake is actually
a Colorado River reservoir that was created when the Parker
Dam was built between 1934-1938.The London Bridge, which crosses
the Bridgewater Channel from the mainland to a small island
on the Colorado River, is world-famous and draws visitors
from all over the world. When the bridge was sinking into
the River Thames in London, Robert P. McCulloch saw an opportunity.
Having the winning bid, the bridge was dismantled and sent
by barge to the California coast where it was loaded, trucked
to Lake Havasu and rebuilt "brick" by "brick".
The bridge is a focal point for the city. The lure of merry
old England draws our year-round guests. Nestled beneath the
bridge is our "English Village" which offers a British
flavor for your shopping and dining pleasure. With its Tudor
style architecture, the shops and restaurants do create the
atmosphere of seeing a piece of "merry olde England".
Stroll the tree-lined walkways, shop and stop at one of our
local breweries for a handcrafted beer (root beer too!). The
various restaurants offer a variety to please any palate.
Here you can also rent a paddle boat, take a boat tour or
take the ferry to the California side of the Lake. Our 26 square
mile city has a population of about 45,000. Because of our
affordable housing, many winter and summer visitors alike
own second homes here and truly can call Lake Havasu City
"home". Some of our winter guests and residents
stay as long as 6 months in Lake Havasu! However you like

or budget. From 5 star resorts, private homes, or RV parks
and campgrounds, vacationers certainly have their choice of

shop, since that is a "good or service") With so
much to see and do, whatever your pleasure, spring, summer,
fall, or winter... any season is a great time to visit Lake
Havasu! The population of Lake Havasu City at the end of 1975
was 15,500. Lake Havasu was formed when Parker Dam was completed
in 1938.It was 482 feet above sea level. The average rainfall
is 5.0 inches. Winter temperatures range from a low of 40
to a high of 80 degrees. It was the water that brought Robert
P. McCulloch, Sr., to Lake Havasu. He was flying over the
Southwest looking for a motor testing site. He spotted the
abandoned Army Air Corps landing strip and rest camp, which
were here after World War II. He purchased this land and set
up his testing station, which is known as Site Six. At the
time, there were no houses here. Mr. McCulloch built a 100
unit mobile home park to house the workers. The Best Western
and the nautical Inn were the first motels. There was no post
office, no radio, or even TV. Gradually, businesses came and
homes were built. When the London Bridge was put up for sale,
Mr. McCulloch thought Lake Havasu would be an ideal place
for it. He put the winning bid, which was $2,460,000. The
London Bridge now spans the Bridgewater Channel in Lake Havasu,
connecting the "mainland" to the island. Below the
bridge on the mainland side is the English Village where you
can stroll the tree-lined walks, stop and have a snack or
a full course meal in between browsing the village shops.
Across the Bridge is the Island Fashion Mall with two fabulous
restaurants, shopping and a fitness center.Colorado River
is the lifeline of our area, and it always has been. So in
this topic, we want to share with you the history of the entire
river and dam operations. You see, it's not just "the
river" or "the lake". It starts with the federal,
then state and local projects. By understanding how each entity
or program works, you get the beat of how it all goes together
to provide a lifeline for our Southwest area.
