Louisiana
Whether you are looking for the excitement of Mardi Gras,
Beauty Pageants and Riverboat Gambling or you enjoy sipping
mint juleps on your front porch with friends and family, Louisiana
is the place for you. With a population of over four million,
Louisiana is the 22nd most populous state in the USA.
In 1803, the United States purchased 800,000 square miles
of land from France for 15 million dollars. The United States
wanted to acquire the area near New Orleans primarily to guarantee
its right to sail vessels down the Mississippi River through
Spanish territory and unload goods at New Orleans for shipment
to the Atlantic coast and Europe. Moreover, the United States
wanted to possess the entire territory of Louisiana because
so many American settlers and merchants were already in the
region and because of its vital geographic position at the
mouth of the Mississippi River. The Louisiana Purchase stands
as the largest area of territory ever added to the U.S. at
one time including: Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, North
Dakota, Texas, South Dakota, New Mexico, Nebraska, Kansas,
Wyoming, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Colorado and Montana.
The weather in Louisiana can best be described as subtropical,
with average temperatures ranging from 38-67F in the winter,
50-78F in the spring and fall and 70-95F in the summer. Humidity
is very high during the summer so the morning and evening
are the best times for outdoor sightseeing as the midday temperatures
are not as comfortable. Hurricanes can appear out of the Gulf
of Mexico from July to October in coastal areas.
Louisiana is rich in agriculture. Forestry is the number one
agricultural industry in Louisiana with 13.9 million acres
of forests. Louisiana ranks 2nd in the nation in the production
of sugar cane and sweet potatoes, 3rd in rice and 5th in cotton
and pecans. Louisiana is also the sole source of Tabasco pepper.
More shrimp are caught in Louisiana waters than any other
place in America. Louisiana is also the 3rd largest producer
of petroleum and the 2nd largest producer of natural gas in
the United States.
Louisiana’s second largest industry is tourism. In the
year 2000, international and domestic visitors spent approximately
9 billion dollars in Louisiana. Shopping and gambling are
among the top things visitors do when in Louisiana. While
in Louisiana, be sure to attend one of the many festivals
throught the state. There are currently over 400 annual fairs
and festivals in Louisiana including Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
Set aside a weekend to enjoy one of the many scenic byways
in Louisiana. The byways, which cross almost every area of
the state, bring you into the heart of the distinctive scenic
beauty and cultural uniqueness that is Louisiana. Enjoy our
national forest, Kisatchie. Sample the culinary delights of
jambalaya, gumbo and pralines. Make the most of your visit
by exploring the Atchafalaya or camping on the Ouachita. Visit
some of the many historical sites, like the state capitol
in Baton Rouge, the tallest in the nation, the Cathedral of
St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette or the Melrose Plantation
in Natchitoches, with homes dating back to the 1700’s.
Whatever your lifestyle, Louisiana has just what you’re
looking for.
