This is the city that is rich in dinosaur excavations.
Here in Grand Junction, the world’s first known Brachiosaurus
was excavated from Riggs Hill, is the quarry site for the
Apatosaurus at Dinosaur Hill, and has ongoing excavations
at Rabbit Valley. Cross Orchards Historic Farm Site, a living
history site museum in town, runs the excavation sites. There
is also a Dinosaur Journey Museum in town and the Museum of
Western Colorado.
Do not miss the lava formed Grand Mesa, the world’s
largest flat-topped mountain. This monument can be enjoyed
by the 23-mile Rimrock Drive that goes through it.
The downtown area has a five-block residential historic district
with century-old homes, making for a lovely walking tour.
While downtown, you may wish to visit The Winery, a recommended
upscale eatery, or The Blue Moon for a more casual dining
experience.
Lastly, be sure to catch the summer harvest of peaches –
purported to be the juciest in the west!
