summer concerts in the Town Square, Grand Cities Artfest,
Farmer's Market, UND's annual fall Potato Bowl, and the New
Year's Eve First Night Celebration just to name a few. So
if you want to hop off the fast track to experience a slightly
slower pace, the plains of North Dakota beckon you. Tall prairie
grass and rural life surround the Grand Cities and offer heart
within this exquisite heartland. The Alerus Center is a state-of-the-art
facility that can host various conventions, exhibitions, meetings
and banquets. It also houses a regulation NCAA football and
soccer field. The arena seats 13,400 for football or soccer
and 22,000 for entertainment events. The Center features 17
luxury suites, eight concession stands, two vending sites,
14 ticket windows and four merchandise stands. With 130,000
square feet of exhibit space, it is the largest hall between
Seattle and the Twin Cities. The Center opened its doors in
February 2001 and has hosted such acts as Bill Cosby, Aerosmith
and the Backstreet Boys. The beautiful Chester Fritz Auditorium
is situated above the winding English Coulee on the UND campus
and provides a splendid array of national entertainment ranging
from country to theatre and family to classical performances.
World renowned for its acoustic excellence, the Chester Fritz
Auditorium comfortably seats 2,400 people.
From live theater to musical performances, Greater Grand Forks
is alive in the fine arts. The Artsplace is a unique fine
arts gallery and studio. Local, regional and national artworks
are displayed, with everything from original prints (lithographs,
intaglio, woodcuts and silk-screens), paintings, photographs,
to computer images and digital photos. With a list of more
than 300 species, Grand Forks makes an ideal base for a birding
trip to the Red River Valley. Nearby prairies offer chances
to see native grassland species including the greater prairie
chicken, the gray partridge and the short-eared owl. Birding
can be enjoyed year round, from spring migration to the waterfowl
journey south in the fall. Winter birding offers its own charm
with species that include the snowy owl, snow buntings and
the commons redpoll. There are numerous birding sites surrounding
the Greater Grand Forks area including Turtle River State
Park, Kellys Slough National Wildlife Refuge, Prairie Chicken
Management Area and Oak Ville Prairie.Canoeists on the Red
River travel through the heart of the Valley. The 304-mile
Red River passes bountiful farmland checkered with bottomland
forest and tall grass prairies. Canoe rentals are available
through the University of North Dakota Lifetime Sports Center.
A canoe package includes a 17-foot aluminum canoe, two oars,
two lifejackets, vehicle tie down kit and two seat cushions
for $20 a day. North Dakota and Minnesota rank among the greatest
hunting areas in the country. Whether your after white-tailed
deer, waterfowl, antelope, moose, coyote or prairie dogs,
a short drive from Greater Grand Forks will get you to prime
hunting areas. Turtle River State Park is just 22 miles west
of Grand Forks on U.S. Highway 2. Situated along the heavily
wooded Turtle River Valley, this 784-acre park is a contrast
to the open, agriculture lands that dominate eastern North
Dakota. The river was named for the mud and snapper turtles
once found in abundance in the streams. Today the entire park
is a natural sanctuary, harboring an abundance of plant and
animal life, including deer and occasionally a wandering moose.
The wetland area is a haven for birds and migratory waterfowl.
The park features 125 modern and primitive camp sites, a woodland
lodge and group cabins, a mountain bike trail, self-guided
nature trails, fishing for rainbow trout and special programs
presented in an outdoor amphitheater. Winter activities include
cross-country skiing, sledding and more. Whether you're outdoors
or under one big roof, Greater Grand Forks is your source
for great shopping fun! The New Grand Forks Marketplace located
conveniently off I-29 is home to several retailers, restaurants
and hotels. With several business opening over the course
of a year, you're sure to see plenty of bustling activity
at the new Best Buy, Super Target, Famous Footwear, Gordman's
Department Store, Old Navy, Bed Bath & Beyond, Branigan's
Restaurant and others. With more than 70 stores, Columbia
Mall is the largest indoor mall in the area and includes anchor
stores Marshall Fields, JCPenny and the new Sears store. The
new Grand Cities Mall on South Washington Street is home to
many locally-owned stores and restaurants and is anchored
by Big K-Mart. Formerly the South Forks Plaza, the Grand Cities
Mall is being developed as the area's only retail "entertainment"
shopping center. Expect exciting changes over the next few
months, including a "town square" and an authentic
operating carousel. Feel free to stop by and view the progress
being made. Across from Cabela's in East Grand Forks, the
new Riverwalk Centre is filled with a variety of unique stores,
restaurants and specialty shops, and is anchored by Crafts
Direct, the largest hobby and craft supplies store between
Minneapolis and Seattle. Experience the downtown area of Greater
Grand Forks which offers many shopping opportunities in a
scenic setting along the Red River. Antique and specialty
shops in the area carry a wide assortment of items for your
shopping pleasure. Greater Grand Forks offers a variety of
unique dining opportunities. Experience everything from the
