Galveston, Texas
One of the first sites believed to be inhabited
in the area, Galveston Island is a small city with a large
and colorful history and has been home to quite a variety
of inhabitants. It’s believed to have been the hunting
and fishing grounds for the Karankawa Indians, widely reputed
to be the only cannibalistic tribe in the U.S. In 1817 the
notorious pirate Jean Lafitte established a settlement on
the island and used it as his home port for many years. After
the Texas Revolution, a group of investors founded a town
around the harbor which was later incorporated as Galveston
in 1839. The island city has given the state of Texas a number
of “firsts” such as: the first Roman Catholic
convent, first city with electric lights; and the first medical
college – University of Texas Medical Branch which is
still flourishing today. Due in large part to the port, commerce
abounded in early Galveston. Once known as the “wall
street of the south”, Galveston quickly became a leader
in commerce and finance. In 1900, a disastrous hurricane claimed
more than 6,000 lives and devastated the city. The 10 mile
long seawall erected two years later has protected the city
for over 100 years, but Galveston never regained it’s
former glory. Today, it’s a quiet community boasting
over 32 miles of beaches, beautiful city parks, tennis courts,
golf courses and many other recreational areas. The historic
“Strand” district which was once a thriving financial
center is now home to quaint shops and restaurants catering
mostly to tourists. Other attractions include the IMAX theater
located in Discovery Pyramid, one of three unique structures
built in conjunction with NASA, there is also the Aquarium
Pyramid and Rainforest Pyramid, all offering unique experiences
for adults as well as children. Festivals such as Dickens
on the Strand each Christmas season and the Mardi Gras celebration
each year provide additional entertainment. Moderate temperatures
provided by the Gulf Stream allow you to enjoy outdoor activities,
water sports, fishing and boating almost 12 months a year.
