Florence, Alabama
The City of Florence was founded in 1818 on
the banks of the beautiful Tennessee River in the scenic Northwest
corner of Alabama. Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, Tuscumbia,
and two counties, Lauderdale and Colbert, comprise the Shoals
area. Florence and the Shoals has a population of over 140,000
and offers the experience of a small Southern town, including
a generous helping of Southern hospitality, with all the amenities
of a large city. Florence boasts a state-of-the-art conference
center, a beautiful marina and harbor, a restored downtown
area, a beautiful municipal golf course and a technologically
advanced library. Florence, and the entire Shoals area, is
the perfect place to live, work, retire, and visit. The Shoals
area is fortunate to have several museums. What is unique
about a children's museum is that the exhibits and programs
are geared specifically to the developmental stages and needs
of children. There are 38,000 children 18 and under in the
surrounding three-county area. The purpose of the Children's
Museum of the Shoals is to further classroom education and
compliment existing cultural and educational resources. One
of the oldest structures in Florence, Pope's Tavern served
as a stagecoach stop. tavern and inn, and as a military hospital
during the Civil War - serving both the Blue and the Gray
alike. The City purchased the house in 1965 from the Lambeth
family who had owned it since 1874 and used it as a home.
It is now a museum furnished with interesting 18th and 19th
century antiques, artifacts from the early history of Florence
and from the Civil War period. Pope's Tavern hosts an annual
"Frontier Day Celebration" the first weekend in
June. This festival includes educational demonstrations, arts
and crafts of the pioneer period, and dulcimer music. Participants
wear costumes typical of the period.
Ancient, Authentic, Historic - The Florence Indian Mound is
the Tennessee Valley's largest domiciliary mound. The mound
in Florence is a typical example of the work of those mysterious
early Indians who discovered Alabama before the Cherokee and
the Chickasaws, indeed before the mighty Creek nation occupied
the lands stretching from the Tennessee River to the Gulf
of Mexico. The quadrilateral mound is 42 feet high and has
a base diameter of approximately 310 feet northeast by east
to southwest by west, and 230 feet southeast by south to northwest
by north. The measurement on the summit is approximately 145
feet by 94 feet. Early settlers in the region found steps
on the east side and discovered that it had been enclosed
by an earthen wall which began on the downstream end of the
mound, encircling it to a point on the river's upstream side.
The cultural center for Florence, Kennedy-Douglass Center
for the Arts is a gallery, an educational facility, a museum,
and a center for the coordination and promotion of cultural
activity throughout the Shoals. Given to the City by Hiram
K. Douglass, the Center offers workshops and classes for all
arts disciplines, and for all ages. Arts Alive is the annual
juried fine arts & crafts festival and exhibition sponsored
by the Center and its Volunteers, and is held each May at
the center and Wilson Park. Every year since 1990, right after
Thanksgiving, two NCAA Division II football teams meet in
Florence, Alabama, to battle it out and determine the national
champion for the year. The football game takes place at Braly
Stadium, but it’s not the only event of the weekend;
the downtown Florence Christmas Parade is held this weekend,
and a special awards banquet honors the best player in Division
II by giving him the Harlon Hill Award. The city looks forward
to the game for months in advance, and it’s a great
time to come and experience southern hospitality at its best.
For food visit any of Florence's own Princeton’s Restaurant,
Ricatoni's Italian Grill or Stephano’s Little Italy
all great places to eat. After eating take a trip to Regency
Square Mall where they offer several great nationally known
stores and The Downtown Shopping District which has lots of
specialty shops, antique stores and more!
