Enid, Oklahoma
Located in Northwest Oklahoma and currently
having a population of approximately at 47,000. During the
oil boom of the late 1970s and early 1980s, Enid’s population
was more than 51,000. The huge grain elevators on the east
side of town have long been Enid landmarks, reflecting the
city’s agricultural roots. From the days when farmers
rode trains into Enid every week to trade their butter and
eggs for food and cash, Enid has been the retail trade center
of Northwest Oklahoma. So, it's not surprising that the largest
single block of workers in the city is involved in retail
trade. Someone once said that Enid is the largest retail trade
center between Tulsa and Denver. It is definitely the trade
center for Northwest and north central Oklahoma, and has the
largest and only enclosed shopping mall in this part of the
state. When finding things to do in Enid one can visit several
historical sites such as The Museum of the Cherokee Strip
and the Humphrey Heritage Village stand side by side on the
west side of Enid’s historic Government Springs Park.
Historical artifacts cover the history of the Cherokee Strip
Land Run and Oklahoma events from 1540 to present. The Humphrey
Heritage Village includes the “Glidewell Home,”
an elaborate Victorian style home that has been refurbished.
The original land office where pioneers lined up to file their
claims after the great land run of 1893 are on the premises
as well as Enid’s oldest church and an original one-room
schoolhouse. If trains fascinate you, you will enjoy the Railroad
Museum of Oklahoma located on N. Washington. Within the museum
compound, there are eight cabooses from railroads that have
served Enid, a baggage car, motor cars, a three-dome tank
car, a 50-ton engine, a Champlin tank car, a Frisco 1519 Steam
Engine, a Frisco boxcar and hopper car. New additions to the
museum include an Amtrak lounge car, two flat cars and three
other boxcars. The model railroad room includes HO-gauge,
N-gauge, and Lionel layouts. Over 900 pieces of railroad dining
car china plus an array of railroad memorabilia is also on
display. If you like sports Enid has the 2002 USBL National
Champions and Oklahoma's only professional basketball franchise,
the Oklahoma Storm plays all of their home games at the venerable
Mark Price Arena in downtown. David Allen Memorial Ballpark
is home to the Enid Pastimers, a semi-professional ball club
in the Red River League. You can also watch high school, college
and American Legion baseball; state, regional and national
baseball tournaments, outdoor concerts and other special events.
