El Paso, Texas
As early as 1598, explorers such as Juan de
Onate were enchanted by the beauty of the area called Big
Bend. El Paso is located in an ancient mountain pass surrounded
by the mile high peaks of the Davis Mountains. The largest
U.S. city on the Mexican border, El Paso and it’s Mexican
sister city, Juarez, have a combined population of two million.
Spanish influence is predominant in the city’s architecture,
food and way of life. This is also evidenced by the fact that
El Pasoans celebrate Thanksgiving in the spring to commemorate
the end of the hard journey of Juan de Onate’s expedition.
That April feast pre-dates the Pilgrim’s celebration
by a full 23 years. The surrounding area offers much in the
way of “things to do and see”. El Paso's Lower
Valley is site of several graceful old Spanish missions that
are older than the better-known missions of California. San
Elizario Presidio and Chapel were founded 1777 to serve the
Spanish military garrison and government. Still in daily use,
the chapel stands as built 200 years ago, preserving a type
of architecture that supplanted more austere styles of the
Ysleta and Socorro missions. The village of San Elizario served
as El Paso County seat for years and was location of a presidio
(fort) of the same name. On the site of the Tigua Indian Reservation
is Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, the oldest community in present
boundaries of Texas, now part of the city of El Paso. The
pueblo was established in 1681 by refugees from a bloody Indian
uprising that expelled Spanish and Christian Indians from
present New Mexico. Spanish missionaries and loyal Tigua Indians
settled here at El Paso del Norte and built Ysleta Mission.
The mission church is still the religious focal point of the
Tigua Indian community. Besides the historical sites, there
are numerous art and history museums, “adventure”
tours by land and water in the mountains as well as diverse
cultural events including symphony orchestra, theaters, libraries
and diverse sporting events such as horse racing, polo, tennis,
football and basketball. Home of University of Texas at El
Paso campus which boasts the unique Bhutanese-style architecture
of the Sun Bowl Stadium. For all the activities available,
El Pasoans tend to take life at a slower pace. Hiking in the
mountains or shopping sprees to close by Mexico, El Paso is
a beautiful and diverse city to enjoy.
