This is where you catch the Durango & Silverton
Narrow Gauge Railroad for the scenic and popular 45-mile trip
through the San Juan Mountains to Silverton, riding in some
of the 1882 coaches and steam engines.
In downtown Durango you will find the Strater Hotel (built
in 1887) and the General Palmer Hotel (built in 1898). What
a great way to step back in time with the antique collections
and old-fashioned décor. Historic Main and Third Avenues
will complement your visit to the old west with all the shops
and buildings. You can even buy an authentic cowboy hat from
O’Farrell of Durango!
If you’ve had enough of the old west and want to relax
a bit, head just north of Durango to Trimble Hot Springs at
Durango Mountain. The newly renovated ski area is also famous
for its mountain biking trails – lots to explore! If
rafting is your passion, you can enjoy that in the summer
on one of the three rivers - Animas, Delores or Piedras.
