This robust city in western North Dakota in
the Heart River valley had its beginning with the Northern
Pacific railroad. The town was named after Wells S. Dickinson,
an official with the railroad. Dickinson is home to Dickinson
State University, a four-year-university, where academia enriches

busy! Dakota Dinosaur Museum. The museum houses ten full scale
dinosaurs, thousands of rock, mineral and fossil specimens
including a complete real Triceratops skeleton. The museum
features an outstanding mineral collection from around the
world. In the museum model laboratory, visitors can view a
complete Triceratops skull. Located at 1221 W Villard in Dickinson,
theUkrainian Heritiage Institute is a living tribute to the
proud heritage of the Ukrainian people who settled in North
Dakota. The U.C.I. was established in 1981 with a membership
of 50 people. Today 500 members represent 26 states and Canada.
The Institute displays numerous exhibits telling the story
of the Ukrainian heritage. Along with the displays, the Institute
also offers its "varenyky-pyrohy" or cheese buttons
for sale, or "pysanky" or Ukrainian Easter eggs
that are designed by local artists. Each July, the Ukrainian
Festival is held for the public. This two day event offers
not only the unique Ukrainian food, but also the entertaining
Stepovi Dity Dancers who range in age from 6 to 46! The colorful
costumes and dance style reflect the culture of Ukraine.
