There are historical sites and tributes to the tribe, including
the Royal Indian Burial Ground, the resting place of sachems
(chiefs) and families of the Narragansett Indian Tribe. Visit
the Narrangansett Indian Longhouse and Narrangansett Indian
Meeting – two meeting places of the Indians.
Charlestown has a historical society that is
housed in a one-room schoolhouse that has been authentically
restored and furnished to represent the 19th century era.
The Audubon Society of Rhode Island has a refuge
on Watchaug Pond, the Kimball Wildlife Refuge. This refuge
has trails and habitat for water fowl and migrating birds.
Ninigret Park in Charleston is a former naval air station
with picnic areas, ball fields, bike courses, a three-acre,
spring fed swimming pond and a senior citizen’s center.
This is open in the summer only.
Scenic Route 1 offers easy access to Charlestown.
This is an excellent drive with beautiful views of the water,
access to state parks, many historic monuments, and quaint
seafood restaurants all along the way!
