Brownsville, Texas
The vast plains located south and west of the
Hill Country is known as the Rio Grande Valley. Named for
the Rio Grande River which forms the westerly border between
South Texas and Mexico, this region is best known for it’s
citrus crops and cattle ranches. Texas’ southernmost
city, Brownsville, serves as an international seaport, airport
and railroad exchange point on the Mexican border. The city
was founded as Fort Brown to protect the southern national
boundary of the United States after the independent Republic
of Texas became a U.S. state. This, unfortunately, touched
off the Mexican-American War from 1846 to 1848. Several of
the original Fort Brown buildings are now part of the Unviersity
of Texas at Brownsville. Brownsville is the Valley’s
largest city attracting industry and tourism with proximity
to South Padre Island and Mexico, and a sub-tropical climate
excellent for golf, water sports, tennis, birdwatching (more
than 485 species share the refuges and wild places around
the city), etc. Brownsville offers both fresh and salt water
fishing for the avid angler. Annual events such as Charro
Days, a costumed fiesta in late February, and the Shrimp Festival
in June provide tourist and citizens the opportunity to share
the music, dancing and foods of the two-nation region.
