This is a this cool college town that brings
you the best of Indiana University and days filled full of
funky shops, unusual restaurants, live clubs and brewpubs,
two wineries plus three lakes including the state's largest
and loads of outdoor activity through the state's only national
forest. Indiana University, one of the original "Big
Ten," is one of Bloomington's major attractions. It is
the oldest state university west of the Alleghenies, having
been founded in 1820. It has grown into one of the world's
most distinguished institutions of higher learning. If your
looking for some great shopping and eating take a trip to
the downtown area, which encompasses 11 blocks and boasts
a wide array of specialty shops, restaurants and the majority
of the area's live music clubs. Over 175 businesses thrive
in the downtown area and include art galleries, cooking shops,
clothing for men and women, athletic stores, plus music and
bookstores. Several times throughout the year local entertainers
perform during the lunchtime to entertain shoppers. Be sure
and venture into Fountain Square, located just south of the
courthouse. The enclosed mall, containing galleries, clothing
stores and specialty shops is the result of a two-year effort
in restoring many of the downtown buildings to their original
grandeur. A covered skywalk provides easy access to the covered
parking garage on Fourth Street. Another renovation is the
Antique Mall. This former Tom Taylor Grocery Building has
become an antique lovers' haven. Three stories and over 100
dealers provide an endless trail of varied antiques. Open
daily, the Antique Mall is a definite must when visiting downtown.
Lake Monroe was created by the damming of Salt Creek in 1963.
Sports and recreation abound with skiing, swimming and boating
available in most areas. Fishing is allowed year-round. The
lake is also home to the Crappie U.S.A. fishing tournament
in April and May. Hundreds of tagged crappie worth thousands
of dollars in cash and prizes are released in Lake Monroe.
A beautiful and unique natural area, Griffy Lake is a 1,200-acre
nature preserve located just minutes form downtown Bloomington.
Fishing: Griffy Lake itself provides habitat for waterfowl
and a variety of fish and other aquatic organisms. Species
of fish include largemouth bass, largemouth bass fingerlings,
bluegill, red-ear sunfish and channel catfish. Bloomington
and Monroe County play host to a myriad of annual festivals
and events. From art to music to mini-grand prixs they're
a tradition you'll want to make a part of your yearly adventure
to Bloomington/Monroe County. Now if your looking for something
to do at night head on over to The Bluebird. Bloomington's
Rock n' Roll tradition for 26 years. The Bird has charm, character
and classic features matched by few. The place for live music
entertainment. Or if your just in the mood for a nightcap,
have one at Upstairs Pub. Great place to watch IU play, munchies,
darts, pool & TVs all around.
