The heart of the steel industry
that came to prominence in the 1800s,
Bethlehem has several sights that revolve around its earlier
history. The
Moravian Museum charts the development of the settlement after
Moravian
settlers arrived in the 1740s. The Industrial Quarter is a
restored area
from the 1700s that illustrates the Moravian economy and early
colonial
trades.
Should you find yourself in Bethlehem during the second week
of August, your
ears are in for a treat: Musikfest, a summer music festival
that is one of
the largest in the world, highlights more than 300 artists
and groups who
perform everything from Bach to James Brown.
The neighboring city of Allentown served as
the hiding place for the Liberty
Bell when it was removed from Philadelphia in 1777 to keep
it out of the
hands of the British. The Liberty Bell Shrine at Zion Reformed
Church allows
visitors to see the place where it was stored. Area history
is also the
focus of the Lehigh Valley Historical Museum. The Allentown
Art Museum has
U.S. and European works and the Fuller Gem Collection, which
is made up of
some 300 precious stones. Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom
in Allentown is an
amusement- and water-park complex. Among its attractions are
the Dominator
(a vertical thrill ride), Thunder Canyon (a re-creation of
white-water
rafting), the Red Garter Saloon (a restaurant modeled after
a
turn-of-the-19th-century barroom) and White Water Landing
(billed as one of
the highest and fastest waterfall plunges in the world). The
Great Allentown
Fair takes place late August through Labor Day (don't miss
the mashed-potato
wrestling competition).
Easton, 10 mi/16 km northeast of Bethlehem,
is the home of the Crayola
Factory Museum, located at the Binney & Smith factory
where the famous
crayons are made. Though kids will get the biggest kick out
of the museum,
older folks may also enjoy coloring the walls and reliving
the smell of
kindergarten. The museum is popular, so consider making reservations
in
advance. Bethlehem is 45 mi/70 km north of Philadelphia.
