Perhaps best known outside of Washington state
as the southern terminus for ferries and cruise ships heading
north to Alaska, Bellingham is a vibrant little city due in
large part to the presence of Western Washington University.
Still an active shipping port, Bellingham enjoys excellent
views across Puget Sound to the San Juan Islands, and at Squalicum
Harbor there's a large commercial and private boat marina,
a hotel and commercial complex, and a park that together provide
residents and visitors with a chance to enjoy the bay. South
of downtown Bellingham, near the Alaska ferry terminal, is
the historic community of Fairhaven, which was once a separate
town but which has now been incorporated into the greater
Bellingham metro area. Fairhaven's old brick commercial buildings
and interesting shops are a highlight of a visit to Bellingham.
