Named after Stephen F. Austin, the “Father
of Texas”, this gem of a city sits on the north bank
of the beautiful Colorado River surrounded by rich blacklands
and scenic rolling hills. The State Capitol was relocated
from Houston to this site in early September 1839 and the
city has been flourishing ever since. Today, Austin is the
second fastest growing city in America.! Aside from state
government business, Austin is home to more than 1,330 computer
and technology business and was named “Best Place for
Business” by Forbes magazine in May 2000. Also home
of the University of Texas, Presbyterian and Episcopal Theological
Seminaries, four other universities and numerous community
colleges. For entertainment, Austin is regarded as the “Live
Music Capital of the World” with more than 100 live
music venues. You can find anything you want – blues,
county/western, reggae, jazz, Tejano, swing and rock performed
at clubs and nightspots along Sixth Street and scattered throughout
the city. Austin also is home to North America’s largest
urban bat population. Nearly 1.5 million Mexican free-tail
bats inhabit a colony located beneath the Congress Avenue
bridge every summer.
