Alabama
Alabama is a state of contrasts, complete with stately antebellum
homes and towering office buildings. A thriving industrial
economy peacefully coexists with a clean environment and short
commutes between home and office. Alabama has the resources
and activities to appeal to any lifestyle. Alabama has a temperate
climate. The Gulf of Mexico to the south helps to moderate
the temperatures and is a source of ample rainfall. Summer
average temperatures are quite uniform throughout the state,
about 82°F (27°C) in July. January averages in the
northern part of the state are about 10°F (41°C) cooler
than the 51°F (10°C) average for south Alabama. In
the north region it's best described as this beautiful, mountainous
land features deep canyons, broad rivers, and clear lakes
set in lush valleys. Its wide array of flora is ever-changing
with the seasons, adding a special beauty to the area's chiseled
landscapes, scenic waterfalls, and natural rock bridges. As
for the central region it's best known as King Cotton once
reigning here. Many of the stately homes of that era are showplaces
in towns that retain a touch of the past. This is a land of
rivers, of rolling prairie lands and magnificent forests.
It is also home for the greatest share of Alabama's institutions
of higher learning, including the University of Alabama, Auburn
University and a host of smaller schools. The southeast region
of Alabama is the Wiregrass area that has a thriving agricultural
region where fields of soybeans, corn and peanuts stretch
to the horizon. The area is part of Alabama's coastal plain,
where shaded streams meander slowly through woodlands and
fields. The area is a fisherman's paradise, featuring Lake
Eufaula, the Big Bass Capital of the World. And finally the
gulf coast region features ancient swamps, cypress forests,
lush gardens and perhaps the world's purest, whitest beaches.
Gulf Shores is the perfect place for a great vacation: swim,
sail, go fresh-water or deep-sea fishing, soak up the sun,
feast on fresh-caught seafood, or just forget the clock and
take it easy. Alabama features challenging year-round golf
in every region. The renowned Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail
is the largest public golf system in the world. Or choose
from more than 60 private campgrounds, National Forests or
Alabama State Parks. The 21 State Parks are scattered throughout
the state and offer boating, golf, hiking, and fishing. Alabama
has long hunting seasons, low license fees, and more deer
per square mile than any other state. There are also plenty
of turkey, quail, dove, duck, geese and small game. Alabama
has 26 wildlife management areas with controlled hunting and
plenty of accessible private land. Alabama also has a year-round
fishing season, the largest river system in the country, lakes
covering 500,000 acres (200,000 hectares) and a world of bass,
bream, trout, and other sport fish. Plus, the Gulf of Mexico
provides a full range of saltwater fishing. Alabama Ballet,
a professional ballet company of 20 dancers, gives glittering
performances throughout the Southeast. Mikhail Baryshnikov,
a former guest star, pronounced the company talented, young,
energetic, and with great quality and determination.
As for the food, Alabama's restaurants offer everything from
traditional Southern barbecue to haute cuisine. Birmingham's
Highlands Bar and Grill is ranked the fifth best restaurant
in the United States by Gourmet magazine, falling just behind
Spago Beverly Hills in Los Angeles.
